James "Jim" Thien

James “Jim” Thien, age 70, current resident of Georgetown, TX passed into new life January 2, 2017 in Round Rock, TX. Jim was born May 3, 1946 in Chicago, IL and graduated with pride from Lane Technical High School. While attending Wright Junior College he met his future wife and asked her to marry him on their third date in the spring of 1965. He married his beloved Sherry on September 16, 1967 in Chicago, IL. Their 50th anniversary would have been this year. Jim lived in Bolingbrook, IL for 47 years participating in many community, school, sport, and church activities with his daughters. During his 40-year career in telecommunications, Jim attended night school at Roosevelt University, successfully graduating with his Bachelor’s degree in May, 1994. He was a lifelong CUBS fan and thrilled when they won the World Series in 2016. He was a passionate philatelist, an enthusiastic card player, enjoyed traveling with family and friends, and an avid Blackhawks and Bears fan. Jim was a lifelong Lutheran, a member of New Life Lutheran for over 40 years, and a current member of Christ Lutheran Church, Georgetown, TX. Jim’s pride and joy was his family. He loved spending time with them at home and on vacation. His sense of humor brought a smile to everyone’s face. His only goal in life was ensuring that his wife, children, and grandchildren knew they were loved and cared for deeply. Jim lived life to the fullest, making certain to spend as much time with family and friends as possible, especially when he could fire up his waffle iron and make breakfast for everyone. Jim is survived by his wife Sherry of Georgetown, TX; daughter Alison Plotas and husband Pete Plotas of Rockville, MD; Rev. Bridget Thien of Round Rock, TX; grandchildren Ariana and Constantine Plotas; sister Marion Long and husband Sonny Long of Vancouver, WA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents Edward and Helen Thien and grandson Alexander James Plotas. Celebration of life services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Georgetown, TX, Monday, January 9, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. and New Life Lutheran Church in Bolingbrook, IL, Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the BE GREAT Foundation, PO Box 10281, Rockville, MD 20850, www.BeGreatFoundation.org. BE GREAT was established in memory of Jim’s grandson Alexander.
