May 12, 1935 - January 26, 2021
Melvina Ligon (Walker) was born in a three-room shotgun house in Rienzi, Mississippi in Alcorn County on May 12, 1935 to Dewey and Ruth Olene Walker. Growing up she and her family farmed and picked cotton in the cotton fields of Mississippi and Arkansas. Vina was just 15 years old when she married Willie Ligon after only meeting him one time! With Vina in Mississippi and Willie in Detroit for work, their relationship was long distance - writing letters to each other often. Upon their second meeting, they were married (secretly, at the courthouse) without her parents knowledge. As newlyweds, they lived in Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan and Chicago before moving to Bolingbrook in 1961 where they built a home in one of Bolingbrook’s very first subdivisions, Westbury. Vina graduated from the Ami-Ellen Beauty Academy in Joliet, Illinois as a Beauty Culturist in 1965. Upon her graduation, Willie converted their garage into a beauty shop where she gave thousands of haircuts, perms and roller sets until 2019…for 54 years! She loved coffee, crafts and cucumber sandwiches and was lovingly referred to as “Mama” or “Ninnie”. Melvina is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Ligon; daughter, Sandra Jungkans; parents, Dewey & Ruth Walker (Hudson); brother and sister in law, Roy Walker and his wife Sylvia. Melvina is survived by her daughter, Patty Allen; four grandchildren, Shannon Csorba (Aaron), Joshua Allen (Lisa), Shana Allen, Samantha Allen (Peter Bartus); four great-grandchildren, Tyler & Zackary Csorba, Anthony Allen, Niko Allen; sister, Martha Faye McVey and a number of loving relatives and close friends. Visitation Thursday 4-7pm at Independent Baptist Church 380 W. Boughton Rd. Bolingbrook, IL. Family and Friends to Gather Friday 9am until time of service 10am at Independent Baptist Church. Interment Hillcrest Cemetery.
