Dear BAGC family, It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Dr. Mono Mohan Mazumder this afternoon at the age of 98, after developing aspiration pneumonia. Dr. Mazumder lived a very fulfilling life. He was constantly surrounded by family and was a dedicated member of the BAGC community since its inception. He was born and raised in Berhampur, India. After receiving his PhD in Physics from Calcutta University, he first moved to Chicago in 1962 with an invitation to pursue post-doc research at Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1977, he helped found BAGC to create a community for Bengalis in Chicago and BAGC became his extended family. Many will agree, he was a pillar of the community; ensuring that BAGC was always rooted in values of modesty, reasoning, and celebration. Those who knew him can attest to his constant hospitality and warmth. He served as BAGC's second president, serving for two terms in 1978 and 1979. He was very involved for many years and enjoyed attending BAGC events until the end. Dr. Mazumder was an accomplished renaissance man; a celebrated sitar player, artist, athlete, and activist. He performed various sitar programs for BAGC and around the Chicagoland area. His proudest accomplishment was his family. He was married to Pratima Mazumder for 67 years until her passing in 2019. Dr. Mazumder is survived by his three children: Atanu (Ajanta) Mazumder, Taposhi (John) Jarvis, and Atasi (Kushal) Basu, six grandchildren and their spouses, and one great-grandchild. Arrangements are being planned and will be a private celebration of life. Funeral arrangements entrusted to McCauley-Sullivan Funeral Home & Crematorium.
