Dr. Bhupendrarai Shantilal Bhuva
Dr. Bhuva, age 88, passed away peacefully on July 25th, 2023. Bhupen, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Nakuru, Kenya to a large family of limited means. He was the first of seven siblings and many cousins to leave Kenya to pursue higher education in the UK, completing his secondary education in England, and medical training in Radiology in Glasgow, Scotland.
Bhupen married his wife, Bhadra, in 1963. They lived in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania for 5 years with their children where Bhupen was the only radiologist in the country. Following the political turmoil at the time, they eventually relocated to the western suburbs of Chicago. Bhupen completed his U.S. residency at Cook County Hospital, then joined the Radiology Department at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn where he practiced for 30 years. After his retirement from Christ Hospital, he worked in radiology part time at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.
Bhupen was the patriarch of a large extended family around the world, and he inspired two generations of Bhuvas. His courage to venture out of Kenya laid the path to a better quality of life for his siblings and the extended family. His legacy will live on through future generations.
Bhupen had an enthusiasm for life that he shared with his family and friends – old and young. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge, especially history, and loved traveling the world with Bhadra. His time with his children and grandchildren were the highlights of his life. He loved trying new cuisines, watching sports, going to the movies with Bhadra, listening to live music, and dancing. He was admired for his sense of style, dignity, grace, and humility and for being generous to all without expectation.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Bhadra, and his son, Manish (Shefali), daughter, Bijal (Salil) Bhuva-Doshi, grandsons: Deven, Tej, Shay, and Raveen and granddaughter: Sarika. Bhupen will also be dearly missed by his six siblings, sisters and brothers in law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
