Obituary

Davinder Singh Kohli

April 13, 1946 - December 16, 2023

Davinder Singh Kohli passed away on December 16, 2023 around 10 p.m, while surrounded by family. A devoted father and grandfather, he is at peace after a long-fought battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 77 years old.

Davinder was born on April 13, 1946 in Chakwal in present-day Pakistan. Among his loved ones, he is remembered as someone who lived selflessly for others. After his father's death, he cared for his five siblings. Then Davinder spent several decades working grueling hours as an accountant to set up his three children for a lifetime of success. Once they had settled, Davinder rarely asked for anything beyond a
well-fitting pair of shoes, a warm jacket, and a steaming cup of chai.

He was devoted to God and the Sikh faith. It was not unusual to find him at the gurdwara doing seva. He attended daily service for as long as he could. And many of his final days were spent reading his gutka or listening to hymns on a portable gurbani radio he kept close at hand.

For six decades, Davinder had the central tenet of Sikh philosophy — "Ik Onkar" — inked on his left hand. And he was guided by its three principles: naam japna, kirth karni, vandh chakna. Always remember God, earn an honest living, and share your blessings.

Davinder found joy in playing with his seven grandchildren and taking long walks with his wife so diligently that neighbors often recognized their route and attire. He enjoyed listening to classic Bollywood songs and had a ravenous sweet tooth, especially for his favorite dessert: custard with bananas.

Davinder is survived by his wife Harjit Kohli; his three children, Vimaljit Kohli, Indernain Kohli, and Sumit Grover; their spouses, Gurpreet Kohli, Kawal Kohli, and Inderdeep Singh; and his grandchildren, Diti Kohli, Divij Kohli, Bhavneet Grover, Jasdeep Grover, Kunal Grover, Kahen Kohli, and Siya Kohli.

He will be cremated at McCauley-Sullivan Funeral Home & Crematorium (530 W. Boughton Rd, Bolingbrook) on Tuesday, December 19. Visitation is open from 10 to 11:00 a.m, followed by a service from 11:00 to 12:00 pm. The cremation will follow at 12 p.m. Religious services will be held at 1 p.m. at the Wheaton Gurdwara (2131 Creekside Dr, Wheaton), followed by langar.

In lieu of flowers, the family is kindly requesting donations to be made to the Illinois Sikh Community Center in Mr. Kohli's memory. Please use the following link if you'd like to make an honorary donation:
