Donald R. Bruce, age 79, of Winchester, Wisconsin (formerly Burbank, IL) passed away peacefully the morning of October 19th in the loving care of his daughter Dina and family, after a yearlong battle with cancer. Beloved husband to the late Lillian L. Bruce (nee Piven), they made their home in Burbank, where he founded Bruce Masonry in the early '70's, which he operated until his retirement to the Northwoods that he loved so much. An avid hunter and fisherman, he spent years enjoying the outdoors with family and friends, and never missed a hunting season with his son, Donald Jr. His masonry work stands throughout the Chicagoland area, as well as in the homes of family and friends. Upon his retirement, he passed the business to his youngest son, David.
Don was a dear Father to Donald J. (Ellen) Bruce, Dina (Bob) Valiga, and David (Jayne) Bruce. Loving grandfather to Jessica (Pat) Zerkel, Andrea Bruce, Matt and Bobby Valiga. Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Lillian; his parents, Edna and Lester Bruce; his brother, James; sister, Carla Moffit, as well as a dear daughter-in-law, Jayne Bruce, who also lost her battle with cancer just last year.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Bolingbrook – McCauley Funeral Chapel Friday, October 24th from 3-8pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is collecting donations to be given in his memory to a needy family with a child suffering from cancer.
