It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gursharanjit Singh Sarkaria, lovingly known as Gur Singh, who left this world peacefully on April 12, 2024, at the age of 77. Born in 1946, his journey began in the village of Akalgarh Dephiaan in Punjab, India, where he was born to the late Sardar Kuldeep Singh Sarkaria and the late Sardarni Sukhjinder Kaur.
His loving spirit will forever be cherished by his wife of 50 years, Gurpal Kaur, with whom he recently celebrated a golden wedding anniversary — a milestone that reflected the depth of their commitment, love, and mutual respect. He will be dearly missed by his children Karanjit Singh Sarkaria and his wife Melfa Figueiredo Sarkaria, Aman Sarkaria, and Pawanjit Susan Sarkaria with her husband Karandeep Sraon; as well as his adored grandchildren Jahn Sarkaria, Sean, Armaan, and Laila Sraon.
A resident of Bolingbrook, IL, Gur Singh was known for his remarkable green thumb, his passion for poetry, and his unwavering kindness. His gentle spirit and warm smile touched countless lives, and his presence was a comfort to those fortunate enough to know him. He lived his life guided by the philosophy "Nirbhau Nirvair," meaning "without fear, without enmity," a testament to his loving and inclusive nature.
Gur Singh's words, once offered in solace to a family member grieving their own father, echo now as a reflection to his own life:
"A void that can never be filled, a loving voice distilled. Its resonance is still there, to cherish and be lived.
Great soul departed, after undertaking assigned journey with great reverence.
It cherished and completed, its task as ordained by Guru, without negligence.
Let's remember his instinctive decency, cordiality, and forbearance.
He is our guiding light, let's adopt his path of kindness and tolerance."
Until his last days, Gur Singh remained active and engaged in his pursuits and commitments, tirelessly contributing to his community and the lives of those he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, integrity, and the unshakeable belief in the goodness of people.
The celebration of Gur Singh's life will commence with a cremation ceremony on Tuesday, April 16, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at McCauley-Sullivan Funeral Home & Crematorium, 530 W Boughton Rd, Bolingbrook, IL 60440. This will be followed by Kirtan, Ardaas and Langar from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Palatine Gurudwara Sahib, 1280 Winnetka St, Palatine, IL 60067, where friends and family are invited to join in remembrance and reflection.
In lieu of flowers, we invite those who knew Gur Singh to honor his memory through personal acts of kindness, embodying the virtues he cherished and lived by.
As we bid farewell to Gur Singh, we find solace in the guiding light of his spirit and the path of kindness and tolerance he has shown us. May his soul journey on, embraced by the eternal peace he so richly deserves.
