Laverne E. Young's Obituary

Laverne Emma Joseph Young was born in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Percy and Dorothea Joseph, both deceased. Her three brothers, Frederic, Phillip and Howard also preceded her in death.

In December of 1953 she wed Lamar Morton. To this union was born Cheryl and Gregory. Later in life she married Marvin Young.

Laverne graduated from Englewood High School and attended the Art Institute School. She was talented in many aspects of her life. She loved gardening, enjoyed all types of music and had a beautiful singing voice. Art would remain her passion throughout her life. Her murals and drawings have been exhibited at many art fairs and festivals. For years she taught art classes at St Suzanna school in Harvey, Illinois. She also worked as a sales associate at several department stores.

Laverne was an excellent cook who embraced her New Orleans roots and could make killer red beans n' rice, gumbo and mouth-watering deserts.

The eternal optimist, Laverne was an extremely kind, loving, generous and friendly person. She was disgustingly cheerful in the morning and loved to engage in long conversations. Her motto has always been to maintain a sunny cheerful disposition, even when it appears the sky is falling.

Most importantly Laverne was a terrific mom. Her children were her life. There was never a day that went by she didn't brag about her kids, Cheryl and Greg. She adored her grandchild, Courtney and held a special place in her heart for extended family members, Wanda Morton and Nerita Hopkins. She also leaves to celebrate her life cousins Janice Wesley, Deborah Tolentino, and Diane Jack; nieces Karen Joseph and Francis Coleman; nephews Stephen, Fred Jr. and Andre Joseph, Morey and Alan Eley; her best friend of 65 years, Mrs. Valerie Rogers and a host of other family and friends.

Laverne lived with several health issues for the last decade of her life in an assisted living facility where she befriended many residents and the wonderful CNA's who looked after her. She battled her health issues with grace and strength. Her passion and integrity to those she loved was unwavering and her beautiful smile and laugh will live on forever.
