Matthew Elliot Johnson's Obituary

Matthew Elliott Johnson, 43, of Woodridge, Illinois, passed away on February 12, 2025, in Mack, Colorado. Born on June 16, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois, Matt lived a life full of energy, passion, and an unwavering loyalty to those he held dear.

Matt, a member of the Apostolic Faith Church, enjoyed singing in the Young Adult Choir (YAC) and was one of the first groups of young men in the Rites of Passage, a male mentoring group for young men. From an early age, Matt dreamed of serving his country as a Marine. With relentless determination and perseverance, he made that dream a reality. A proud graduate of Romeoville High School's Class of 1999, he went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from 2003 to 2005 as a rifleman with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. His service took him to the frontlines of Iraq at the Syrian border, under the command of Gunnery Sergeant Ackerman who praised his initiative and where his courage and dedication reflected the same steadfast spirit that defined every aspect of his life.

Matt had a magnetic presence—outgoing and charismatic, he never met a stranger and everywhere he went, someone knew him. His laughter and radiant smile left an indelible mark on everyone who crossed his path. He had an incredible ability to connect deeply with people and was always there for those who needed him—whether offering a shoulder to lean on or sharing in the joy of good conversation and laughter.

A devoted fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Matt could often be found decked out from head to toe in Chiefs gear and this included his children. He found joy in every play, every game, and every spirited debate about football.

Beyond his love for sports, he had a passion for playing pool, listening, dancing, and singing to music. These were the pastimes that brought him camaraderie and countless memorable nights.

Matt believed wholeheartedly in treating others with fairness and respect. He embraced people from all walks of life without judgment or hesitation. It didn't matter who you were—he welcomed everyone with open arms, quick wit, teasing remarks, and genuine warmth.

Above all else, Matt was a devoted husband and father. He found joy in reading bedtime stories, where he embellished the characters with a particular voice. Heloved playing games with his children where many times, an important lesson was learned.

Matt was a good cook and Saturday brunch was major event. Sunday dinner prepared by Matt was elaborate, and the quality time with his family was his greatest treasure.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marissa Johnson (née Neitzel); his children: Lijah E. Johnson, Mia S. Johnson, and Matthew S. Johnson; his mother, Gwenetta Johnson; his siblings: Melanie Kirksy, Mary Paul, and Marquinn McDonald; niece Mariah; nephews, Michael and Isaiah as well as numerous first and second cousins and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. McDonald.

Matt's memory will live on through the countless lives he touched. His smile will shine on in the hearts of those who knew him best.
