Dr. Raghu Ram Vollala passed away peacefully in St. Louis, Missouri. Born on December 18, 1936, in the village of Suddala, India, near Hyderabad, Raghu led a life defined by compassion, intellect, and service.
After earning his B.S. in Biology, he graduated from Osmania Medical College in 1963 and began his medical training in the United Kingdom in 1964. In February 1972, he married Shanti Sri, and two years later, they immigrated to Chicago to begin a new chapter in the United States.
Fulfilling his lifelong dream, Raghu became a cardiologist and built a successful private practice in Chicago, IL. He cared deeply for his patients and often provided free care to those in need. He served in several hospitals throughout the Chicagoland area, specializing in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease.
Beyond medicine, Raghu lived a rich and colorful life. He was a poet, capturing the beauty and complexity of life through his words. He had diverse musical tastes, ranging from Indian classical to Broadway to The Beatles, and a deep passion for photography—leaving behind a collection of more than 1,000 cherished photographs and home movies. While living in Europe, he developed a love for fast sports cars, which he enjoyed with great enthusiasm.
Raghu was also an avid traveler with a curious and adventurous spirit. He explored the world extensively—journeying through Asia, Europe, the Americas, and even Antarctica. He was known for his wisdom, wit, and the rare ability to connect with people through thoughtful conversation and warm humor.
He is survived by his daughters Sandhya (Christopher Bowers) and Seema (Malay Shah), and his beloved grandchildren, Rohan (17), Evan (15), and Sona (12). Raghu will be remembered with love and admiration by all who knew him.
