Obituary

Rajeswari Nandam, known lovingly to her family as Raj, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 8, 2026, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy of service, courage, and boundless love.

Born in India in 1936 as the eldest of six children, Rajeswari was an independent woman who moved through life with faith, humor, and generosity — which included always speaking her mind — whether you were ready for it or not. She also fed you, whether you were hungry or not. In 1975, she made a decision that took extraordinary courage: she left India alone and came to the United States to build a new life for her kids and her beloved husband, Krishnaiah Nandam, who preceded her in death in 2020. Here, she became a woman ahead of her time — one who believed in equality, embraced new cultures, and loved all people, regardless of where they came from or who they were — wise in ways that had nothing to do with books. For three years she planted roots on her own, paving the way for the family that would grow around her.

After earning her masters, she built a distinguished career as a Registered Nurse, dedicating nearly two decades to the State of Illinois as a Psychiatric Nursing Supervisor — a role that reflected her compassion for the most vulnerable. For years, she gave her time to local food banks and soup kitchens and still, she played an active role in raising her grandchildren, showing up for them, cooking for them, and caring for them in the same way she had shown up for everyone throughout her life.

In a final act that was entirely in keeping with who she was, Rajeswari chose to donate her body to medical research — ensuring that even in death, she continued to serve. It was a decision that surprised no one who knew her.

She is survived by her three children, twelve grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren — a family she built across two continents and a lifetime of love.

Rajeswari Nandam was a woman who showed up (usually with food): for her patients, for strangers, for every grandchild who needed her, and for every person lucky enough to sit at her table. She leaves behind a world that is quieter without her laugh, and a family that is better for having been loved by her.
