It is with heavy hearts that we announce Rebeca Velasco (Becky) of Downers Grove, Illinois, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2024, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a lifetime of cherished memories.
Adored mother of Karla (Peter) Loeb and Carlos.
Cherished grandmother (Ita) of Kayla, Justin, Jeremy, and Alexander.
Loving sister of the late Maria (Raul) Luna.
Beloved aunt of the late Alex (Andrea) Mitre, the late Mike (Beatrice) Mitre, Joe (Lourdes) Mitre, Yvette (Brian) Williams, and Jessica Moore.
Born on May 2, 1937, in Mexico City, Rebeca was deeply connected to her Hispanic roots and honored her heritage throughout her life in various ways. For numerous years, she served as the council president of Downers Grove and surrounding cities for the League of United Latin American Citizens, an organization committed to protecting and advancing civil rights for the Hispanic community in the United States. She also served as an Election Judge in DuPage County for 15 years.
Beyond her civic engagement, Rebeca's vast set of skills and talents led to her involvement in broadcasting, event planning, entertainment, jewelry sales, and much more. She was passionate about giving back to her community, both through volunteering and philanthropy. Rebeca donated to organizations like Operation Smile and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Her faith and relationship with God were an essential part of her life. Every day, Rebeca prayed for the health and protection of her loved ones.
Rebeca's family was the center of her world. After immigrating to the States in her 20's and learning to navigate a new country and language, she later worked tirelessly to provide a better life for her children. She was beyond proud of her grandchildren's accomplishments and would not hesitate to share that with anyone who would listen.
Rebeca was not only the matriarch of her family; she was a devoted friend to so many who would agree they were fortunate enough to be a part of her life. Her infectious laughter, glamorous disposition, and effervescent spirit added a special spark to any room she entered.
Rebeca was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and tenacity. Her charming and lively spirit touched the lives of generations. Rebeca found joy in life's simple pleasures, believing life should be treated as a celebration. She loved her sweet red wine but could never turn down a Michelada or a Palomita.
As we mourn the loss of Rebeca Velasco, let us also celebrate her remarkable life and the love she shared with all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace with the Lord, and may we cherish and never forget all the beautiful memories her life gave us.
