Dr. Saroj Kapur, passed away peacefully on 11/1/2022 at the age of 93 surrounded by family and friends in her Chicago home. Dr. Kapur was born December 28th, 1928 in Lahore, Pakistan to Pyarelal and Satyawati Mohindra and a family of eight siblings who she adored.
She attended Lady Harding Medical College, during the tumultuous Partition period in India, where she was separated from her family for a while as a partition refugee. During medical college, she met her husband, the late Dr. Yash Pal Kapur, who she married in 1952. After the Kapurs completed medical college, they moved to the United States for residency at various hospitals, including Mass General Hospital. The Kapurs then moved back to India with their young family where they worked at the acclaimed missionary hospital, Christian Medical College in Vellore. Dr. Kapur ultimately settled in East Lansing permanently as a pediatrician and professor at the Michigan State University. There she was a leading professor in clinical genetics for several years, developing deep relationships in the community and building the Kapur Endowment aimed to foster and deepen connection to India among students.
She inspired those around her with her vigorous leadership in the community, warm and social nature, and passion for spirituality, philanthropy and social change. She made lifelong friends where ever she went and was the mentor, role model and advisor of her nuclear and extended family, and friends. She had the unique gift of inspiring trust and gaining the affection of those she interacted with. She was also an avid reader, chess and card player, traveler, devoted mother, aunt and grandmother. She loved good food, enjoying her daily sweets and fruit and never missed a day of exercise or chair yoga even in her later years.
She is survived by her brother Chander Mohindra, children Kapila Kapur Anand (husband, Dr. Pramod Anand) and Shaila Kapur (husband, Dr. Naren Yadav), grandchildren Pooja and Sunjay as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and grandson Nikhil Yadav.
There will be a memorial service/visitation at McCauley-Sullivan Funeral Home 530 West Boughton Road, Bolingbrook, IL 60440 at 10 am on November 7, 2022 followed by a private cremation . As she would have wanted, please send memorial donations to Feeding America or the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.
