Dr. William M. Hamby's Obituary

Dr. William McClellan Hamby, aka "Doc", was born in East St. Louis, IL on April 10, 1930, to Clarence and Anna (King) Hamby.

Doc loved many things: his family, his children, his grandchildren, his country, medicine, intelligence, and baseball. Doc joined the US Navy in January 1948 continuing the family's tradition of serving the country which has a rich military history dating back to the Revolutionary War. He participated in multiple operations as a Navy Corpsman with the FMF, including the invasion of Inchon, and served as a Chief Petty Officer on a Naval Hospital Ship from 1950-1951. He was Honorably Discharged in October of 1951 with the rank of HM2. After his time in the Navy, Doc pursued his medical degree from the University of Illinois, receiving an M.D. and later a Ph.D. in Internal Medicine.

William is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Anna, his brothers Paul and Tommy, his sister Sally, his niece Anna, his Wife Margaret (nee Schermerhorn) and former wife Christine (nee Hanson). Doc is survived by his four children: Katherine (Jeff) Meindl, Heather (Christopher) Hilgendorf, Margaret (Jesse) Schnute and William (Jenny) Hamby II; his grandchildren: Arthur, Jonathan, Aryanna, Alexis, Kyle, Jayce, Ashlyn, Asher, Aidan, Jalynn, Ian, & Jonathan; his two sisters: Myrtle (Milburn) West, & Doris Jane (Roberto) Cueva; his sister-in-law Dorothy (Paul) Hamby; And: multiple nieces, nephews, cousins, and all of "Margaret's Kids."image.png
