William Christopher Hargreaves

William Christopher Hargreaves was born on April 17, 1959, in Norwich, Connecticut, to Bill and Penny Hargreaves. From the very beginning, Chris was surrounded by love and raised with quiet values that shaped the gentle, thoughtful man he became. He lived with kindness and humility. He listened more than he spoke, felt deeply, and loved in ways that were steady, loyal, and sincere. Being with Chris brought a sense of calm and safety, and knowing him made life feel a little better, a little softer. Chris was the devoted husband of Diane—his “Honey Bunny”—and the great love of his life. For twenty-three years of marriage, they shared a partnership built on trust, laughter, comfort, and deep affection. Their life together was defined not by grand gestures, but by the everyday moments they cherished: neighborhood walks, meals at home with Chris cooking on the grill, or dining at their favorite restaurant, trips taken side by side, and evenings shared with a glass of wine. Chris was also a proud and loving stepfather to Kobie, a role he embraced fully, with patience, tenderness, and unwavering support. Family meant everything to Chris. As the oldest of five children, Chris was forever “Big Brother.” He watched over his siblings—Beth, Debbie, Susan and Jeffrey—with a protectiveness and strength that never faded. He often showed his love not with words, but through the sharing of his photographs; they depicted countless acts of kindness and humor which were the essence of his personality. Chris’s childhood in Ellington, Connecticut, was filled with the joys and the antics of a close family bond. He loved sports and proudly played for the Ellington Road Runners football team. Summers spent at the family cottage in Nantasket Beach were especially meaningful to him. There, Grandpa Frank taught the grandchildren how to body surf, back float, and dig for clams. Those days—rich with salt air, laughter, and togetherness—remained close to Chris’s heart and reflected the spirit he carried throughout his life. Chris attended high school in Hanover, Massachusetts, before graduating from Plano Senior High School in Plano, Texas, in 1977. It was there that he discovered photography, joining the photography club under the guidance of his favorite teacher, Bill Cook. Through the lens of a camera, Chris learned to notice and capture nature’s beauty, something he instinctively did in life as well. After earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas Tech University, Chris began his career at Rush Presbyterian Hospital as Assistant Director of Environmental Services. He soon found his true calling in human resources, where his compassion, fairness, and integrity made him someone whom people trusted. As he advanced in his career at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, the University of Chicago Medical Center, and Northwest Community Healthcare, Chris consistently showed up for others with empathy, patience, and respect. He was an active member of SHRM, HRMAC, ASHHRA, and the Human Resources Association of Greater Oak Brook for more than twenty years, not for recognition, but because caring for people mattered deeply to him. While working at the University of Chicago Hospitals, Chris met Diane, introduced by their dear friend and colleague, Sheri Marker. From that first meeting grew a love that was patient, steady, and enduring. They were married in 2002 in their home on Feather Sound Drive in Bolingbrook—a home filled with warmth, comfort, laughter, and love. Chris found joy in the things he loved deeply. Photography was one of his greatest passions, and he had a remarkable eye for capturing the beauty of the world around him from behind the lens of a camera and his iphone. His photographs were often shared with family and friends and were even featured on the local NBC network in Chicago by weatherman Brant Miller. He took great pride in caring for his cars and motorcycles and found freedom and peace on the open road as a member of the BMW Motorcycle Club. He also loved beautiful flowers and made a habit of bringing them home each week as a heartfelt expression of love for Diane. Chris will be remembered not only for his kindness, but also for his quirky sense of humor—his funny photos, playful pranks, and unique way of making others laugh. Most of all, he will be remembered for how he made people feel: seen, valued, safe, and loved. His quick wit was his strength. His loyalty never wavered. His love was constant and true. Though his absence leaves an immeasurable ache, his presence lives on in the many lives he touched and the goodness he left behind. Chris made the world better simply by being himself, and that gift will remain forever. Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Penny Hargreaves. Mourning his loss are his loving wife, Diane, his stepson, Kobie Samuels, his father, Bill Hargreaves, his siblings, Beth Euler (Keith) Debbie Finn (Larry) Susan Stanislav, and Jeff Hargreaves (Patrick Mebine); his aunts Judy Watson and Marge Hargreaves; his in-laws, Dorothy Britton, Elijah Brewer (Hazel) Sally Wells, Arthur Brewer (Brad Starnes) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. William Christopher Hargreaves will be memorialized and honored on a future date.
